JASPERS held a workshop, organised jointly with the Committee of the Regions, in Vienna, on Tuesday 9th May (Europe Day) on the implementation of the EU's Urban Agenda. It was the first of a series of similar workshops, with others planned in Athens, Sofia and Gdansk.

The event, opened by EIB Vice-President Hudák, focused on topics related to core actions of the EU Urban Agenda from a municipal perspective and provided an overview of the budget available under the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) for urban development tasks.

It outlined the way JASPERS can provide support to the preparation of smart city projects or ESIF programmes, irrespective of their scale or financial volume including, for example, urban regeneration, social housing, sustainable urban mobility, waste management and energy efficiency. There were expressions of interest from cities in four countries – Plzeň (Czech Republic), Prešov (Slovakia), Novo Mesto (Slovenia) and Budapest (Hungary).

During those group sessions a number of issues were raised in which strategy and project development could be supported by JASPERS so that municipalities are in a position to prepare ESIF funded quality projects.

The working groups discussed and illustrated achievements, issues and challenges in several urban development pillars and the potential need for JASPERS support.
